With Rise of Iron almost upon us we thought it would be good to talk about the 5 things have us most excited for the new Destiny’s next expansion
5. The Rise Of Iron Chapter In The Destiny Story
I don’t think any would argue that Destiny’s story telling ability has jumped astronomically since the original game was released 2 years ago. Now because of how good The Taken King was we are actually excited for a new story. Rise of Iron features a new form of The Fallen as the “big bads”of this expansion. According to Bungie’s official copy The Fallen Splicers, the new form of Fallen enemy, are attempting to become machine gods themselves. I’d imagine that this means that the Fallen are trying to do an interesting blend of machinery and magic to put their being into the machines themselves. Sepiks returns in the updated version of the Devil’s Lair but this time he is “Perfected”. I am very curious what that is supposed to mean and how that impacts the lore of this game. Plus it will be cool to find out about how the SIVA virus affects The Fallen and why the Lords of Iron had to sacrifice themselves in order to contain it.
I am also excited to learn more about the Lords of Iron. Playing Iron Banner has given us some insight, but now we get to find out about some of the game’s familiar names like Felwinter, Efrideet, Radegast and many more.
Saladin’s background will come out in this expansion as well and it will be good to know about our Iron Banner wrangler. He came in as a very interesting character and in a sort of Eris way he will guide our guardians against the force that he thought he stopped years ago.
4. A New Social Space
There will be a new social space for Rise of Iron. It is called Felwinter’s Peak. In order to even get the social space guardians need to take it back in the very first mission of the new expansion. It is always exciting getting a new area to explore and have a change of pace from the Tower and the Reef. Felwinter’s Peak will be the hub for players to run all things Rise of Iron out of and in addition it will be Saladin’s new residence for iron banner events. Players will also be getting their Plaguelands bounties and Archon Forge arena mode events at Felwinter’s Peak. Bungie claims there will be a lot of secrets to uncover at the new social space as well so I am very excited to see what the community can find here.
3. Gear And Weapons
New expansions mean new gear and armor. The guns and end game gear are the talk of the tower when a new destiny expansion releases. Now we know of the trespasser which was released early for players and has been dropping at 338 light but all of the exotics haven’t been released just yet. Another cool thing that is added for year three is the exotic Ornaments. You can now customize some of your exotics and being a fan of cosmetics that is a nice touch. This also means that even if everyone is using the same gun everyone won’t look exactly the same. Oh yeah and Gjallarhorn is back!!!!
I also really like what looks like the raid gear. Destiny showed off some of the gear sets and the only one that has a real iron banner feel to it is the Warlock gear. The Titan and Hunter gear has a more unique feel to it a out of the three I personally like the Titan gear the most. Also in the new expansion is a hammer weapon that you can pick up and it is very similar to the way the scorch cannon worked in House of Wolves. This will most likely be me with a big ass hammer
Another thing that has me excited for Rise of Iron is the new perks, especially…
Virulence is one of the new and very cool perks that are coming with Rise Of Iron. This perk will release a nanite swarm after a precision kill. This perk gives a name to what is in the trailer and it has to be for an exotic weapon. The idea here is reminiscent of thorn and I’d imagine the nanite swarm does damage over time. Also the gun from the trailer shot pretty fast so that means the player can probably really cut Ann enemy’s health down really quickly. The perk probably doesn’t fair as well in crucible because you need to get a precision kill in order to take effect. It’s a little more difficult and if players aren’t around then the nanite swarm probably disappears, not doing anything useful.
1. Wrath Of The Machine Raid
And finally, the coup d’etat of Destiny, a new raid. Destiny has captivated players with its intricate, interesting, and sometimes frustrating raids. The raids are the most fun part of destiny by far and this new raid looks like pure chaos. We have already seen a beefed up spider tank as a boss and I would venture to guess that there will be two more bosses and they will be “Perfected” versions of old bosses we’ve taken down before. Raids are also where players can get the end game gear which is generally the best and coolest. The raid raises the light cap from 385 to 400, if you can actually get all of the gear. From what we’ve seen so far the gear looks like it will be very cool. I am a big fan of cosmetics so I hope to see a shiny new shader and emblem for beating the hard mode of the Wrath of The Machine Raid.
Bungie’s lead raid designer Gavin Irby recently sat down with Game Informer to discuss designing the new raid:
“We started with some highfalutin’ ideas and literary themes that we were trying to achieve, and through iterations it actually became about smashing s— into other s—. […] The Fallen faction with the SIVA, that’s partly where that comes from, the hybridization and the idea of these two things coming together, that’s some of the s— smashing into other s—. But in gameplay that just turned into like well, let’s start smashing stuff and that’s awesome.”
The raid itself doesn’t release with the DLC. Wrath of the Machine comes out September 23rd just in time for the weekend.
If you didn’t see it here is the first mission and campaign deets to whet your palette before Rise of Iron is available.
And that is everything I think will be really great from this new expansion. I’m sure Bungie will throw in some cool patches along the way. Also if you have a second, take a look back with our Destiny 2 years later round up here.
